Ross® has hit a number of major milestones during its 60 years of success in poultry genetics. Since 1956 when Chunky Chicks Limited opened its doors in Edinburgh, Scotland, Ross has been on a journey of global expansion and is now present in over 100 countries across six continents.
From its Scottish roots, Ross has been shaping the worldwide broiler breeder market and is today widely regarded as the industry leader. As the scale and importance of international poultry breeding has grown, Ross has responded to the market with its diversified product portfolio and continuous genetic improvement within the Aviagen® breeding program.
Over six decades, Ross has led the trend towards product differentiation including the Ross 308, Ross 708 and Ross PM3. By anticipating the needs of customers and changing market requirements, Ross has continued on its journey of global success.
Instrumental to this has been a culture of science and innovation. The introduction of new technologies to the breeding program has led to breakthroughs in performance and efficiency. As a result of such technologies and enhanced product performance, Ross customers now benefit from an FCR improvement in broilers of around 2 to 3 points per year.
Alfons Koerhuis, Aviagen’s CTO, commented, “From humble beginnings in Scotland, Ross continues to lead the poultry industry with a modern breeding program, fit for the dramatic rise in demand for poultry meat now and in the future.
Excellent product performance has always been at the heart of the Ross ethos, but it has become a more sophisticated approach as technology and modern selection methods have developed. Ongoing product development and continuous improvement of our existing portfolio remain a top priority, resulting in a winning combination of FCR, meat production and robustness. Looking to the future, it is imperative that we continue on this journey as we contribute towards the growing global demand for an affordable protein source.”
Many of Aviagen’s customers have enjoyed shared success with the Ross brand over the decades. One of the oldest is Moy Park, Northern Ireland, a loyal customer for over 50 years.
David Gibson, agricultural director at Moy Park, said: “As a long-standing Ross customer, we have been there right from the start of the journey. The alliance between our two teams has remained strong over the years, built upon a foundation of excellent product performance at breeder, broiler and processing level, underpinned by continuous commitment to welfare.
“We are thrilled that Ross is able to celebrate its 60th birthday, a truly remarkable achievement. Being able to forge strong relationships with key Ross personnel, working together in an open and trustworthy manner, is undoubtedly a major factor in our shared success stories.”
Another long-standing distributor Nippon Chunky, Japan commented on this significant milestone. Koji Morinaga, president, said, “Since 1968, we have shared an indispensable relationship and common destiny with Ross. They have brought state-of-the-art technology, support from multi-national specialists, confidence and commitment in a well-balanced product development program to accommodate Japanese market requirements. The sustainable improvement in productivity has allowed us to maintain a competitive edge in the market.”

Ross Asia training seminar held in Bangkok
The 2015 Ross® Asia Training Seminar, recently held in Bangkok, attracted 45 key managers, representing 19 customer companies from 11 countries in the Asia region.
The agenda was designed to mix classroom presentations, on-farm demonstration and troubleshooting, and an interactive group training exercise on brooding to attract and optimize customer participation and interest.
Presentations covered a number of topics including a Ross 308 broiler performance update in Asia, broiler management strategies to maximize performance and economic return, broiler gut health assessment, optimizing ventilation for chick performance, preprocessing handling to reduce downgrades, broiler health and effective vaccination and a broiler performance checklist to complete the agenda.
The farm visit was focused on an in-depth ventilation exercise led by consultant Bernard Green to determine the critical control points and troubleshoot problems to optimize the environmental conditions required for good chick performance. This was followed with a hands-on demonstration and dissection by an Aviagen® Specialist Dr. Richard Bailey, who pointed out what to look for in the gut to determine good health status of the chicks.
On the last day an interactive session was initiated to engage several small groups to set-up a brooding area for 1,000 day-old chicks and test their knowledge and awareness of what is required to enable chicks to get off to good start over the first seven days.
The agenda was carefully selected to achieve the seminar objective -- bring poultry managers together, exchange ideas and update them with the latest information in order to maximize the performance of their Ross broilers when they return to their production facilities throughout the region.
“The most valuable content for me was the 'real' experience on the farm,” says Dr. Hiyori Kinoshita, Nippon Chunky, Japan.“I'll take the information back to our customers. I believe it is useful and helpful to improve broiler performance in our country.”
Greg Hitt, Ross service manager, Asia said, “The practical sessions helped reinforce many of the academic lessons provided throughout the seminar as well as allowing a good opportunity for customers to talk and share their own experiences. Hopefully each attendee will return to their company and apply their knowledge to help solve a problem or drive further improvements in product performance.”
“It was a very pleasant time to share lots of experience and knowledge from the field. I am happy to see that the participants were interested in learning more about continuing to improve the Ross broiler performance throughout Asia,” says Dr. Changhee Lee, Ross service manager, Asia.

Ross 140 Club launched in Finland
The Ross® 140 Club, established by Aviagen® SweChick Ab in 2012, recently welcomed its first members in Finland. A special awards event was organized in conjunction with Ross customer DanHatch Finland to celebrate the achievements of five hatching egg producers, who reached or exceeded the Club’s target of 140 chicks or more.
The best farm recorded an excellent result of 152.1 chicks per hen housed. Elina Kari, technical advisor, DanHatch Finland, used the meeting to extend her thanks to the egg producers and parent stock rearing farms: “Although the size of the laying farms have increased, you have succeeded to get very good results. It is now vital that we continue to pay attention to good management practice. We also hope to use our network of companies to exchange advice and information and may even get some good tips for the future from our Danish sister company and share our experiences with them.”
Hannu Tiuttu, technical and sales manager of Aviagen SweChick Ab, added: “The Ross 140 Club was created to acknowledge and reward our customers’ producers who achieve excellent results which impact on the economic performance of their businesses. It has been a successful initiative with our customers in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland and we are delighted that it has now been rolled out to the Finnish market. It has been a great pleasure for us to see the winners’ outstanding stockmanship reflected in these results and we look forward to more award recipients joining the Ross 140 Club.”
The Finnish market has undergone some changes in the past few months. DanHatch Finland recently acquired the hatchery business and related real estate assets from meat company HKScan Finland Oy, including two hatcheries in Kokemäki and Mynämäki. “Our aim is to create favorable surroundings for day old broiler chick production in terms of quality and quantity. DanHatch Finland will concentrate on day-old chick production under its own management but in close cooperation with HKScan Finland. This new structure will add competence and efficiency to this very valuable part of the production process,” said animal sourcing director Veli-Matti Jäppilä, HKScan Group. He added: “We are also planning to make major changes for the slaughter and for the time being the selection of a new production site is under consideration.”
Last year HKScan Finland decided to move from Ross 508 to Ross 308 and, due to the continuous development of the Ross 308 and the product’s suitability for the needs of the industry, results until now are promising as reflected in the achievements of the Ross 140 Club members.

Hawa Chicken is the latest poultry firm to achieve entry to the Ross® 400 Club in the Middle East and Africa. The success comes as two of its contracted broiler farms recently reached a European Production Efficiency Factor (EPEF) of 400 or more with their Ross flocks, scoring 416 and 413 respectively.
The company is the third to have entered the Ross 400 Club since it was established in the Middle East and Africa last year. Hawa Chicken, the largest poultry company in Lebanon, is an integrated company founded in 1957, offering high quality poultry meat exclusively from the Ross breed.
Dr. Ibrahim Ibrahim, Ross International Technical Manager, said: “We’re delighted to welcome the latest members to the Ross 400 Club and it’s great to see it growing in popularity. I am confident that more and more farmers across the MEA region will see the success that’s been achieved so far and become members of the 400 Club themselves in the near future.”
Jalal B. El Hawa, Vice President and GM of Hawa Chickens, said: “The Ross 400 Club is a great initiative and we are thrilled to have two farms achieve the required EPEF score. We aspire to make Hawa Chicken the primary poultry producer in the Middle East and using Ross means our breed is the best it
Bulent Tanyildizi, International Commercial Manager, Middle East & Africa, presented the award to Hawa Chicken and commented on their success: “I am delighted for the Middle East that yet another company is demonstrating just what is possible with the Ross bird.
