Making pig, poultry feed more efficient, sustainable

More efficient and environmentally friendly ways of feeding pigs, poultry and rabbits are the focus of a new European research project that will not only make livestock production more sustainable, but will help to reduce Europe’s import of feedstuffs.
The Feed-a-Gene project aims to develop new and alternative feed resources and technologies, and is being led by the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA). It is also looking to identify and select animals that are better able to adapt to changing conditions, working to optimize both the feed and the animal.
The EUR9 million (US$9.9 million) project sees public and private partners, including Cobb and Buhler, from across the animal production industries in Europe and China working together, and the results should help to improve the position of the pig, poultry rabbit sectors as demand for animal protein continues to rise.

Getting more from less

Feed-a-Gene aims to not only unlock the potential of existing animal feeds but to identify new and alternative feed sources. It will also look at precision livestock production, including precision feeding for better adapting the nutrient supply to animal requirements.
New genetic markers and genetic diversity will be used to breed animals that are more efficient and robust, and capable of using feed resources that are not, or are less, in demand from other industries.
The group is also hoping to develop new and alternative feed and technologies that will make better use of local feed resources, green biomass and by-products from the food and biofuel industries.

Volatility, uncertainty in corn market due to RFS equally damaging for chicken producers

    "We are thankful and support the action that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has taken, and appreciate the one year volume reduction, but, quite frankly, chicken producers need a much longer term and permanent solution," said National Chicken Council President Mike Brown December 5 in testimony. "Congress created this mess, and ultimately, Congress must fix it."
    Brown testified at an EPA public hearing for the 2014 standards under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program. EPA released on November 15th a proposed 2014 RFS standard that will reduce the conventional fuel mandate (corn-based ethanol) from the originally required 14.4 billion gallons to 13.0 billion gallons. Congress sets the renewable fuels volume mandates, but EPA can administratively lower the requirement in certain situations.
    "EPA's announcement was a good first and welcome step, but ultimately, Congress must act," Brown told the agency. "Congressional action to repeal the RFS remains the most viable pathway to allowing all users of corn to have equal standing in the marketplace."
    Brown noted that last year, more than 40 percent of the nation's corn crop went to ethanol production - not food or feed. This rising demand for corn has artificially forced prices for the commodity up by nearly 40 percent since 2005, to the detriment of U.S. food producers and hungry families. "The volatility and uncertainty in the market has been equally damaging for poultry producers," he continued.
    Since the RFS was aggressively escalated in 2007, average annual feed costs have skyrocketed by $8.8 billion per year for poultry producers; and last year, the average U.S. family of four faced a $2,000 increase in food costs due to higher corn prices brought on largely by the RFS.
    Brown continued, "We are experiencing a bumper corn crop this year, and corn prices have fallen for many reasons, but one year of good conditions does not a trend make. We know all too well from last year's horrific drought that corn crop projections and inventories can be erased from Mother Nature's wrath. The law provides for a waiver to the RFS when such action is in the national economic interest. If the waiver was not warranted in 2012, how much more economic damage has to be on the horizon for a law to work?
    "The insecurity and volatility for those of us who depend on corn and Mother Nature, has caused much devastation for U.S. chicken producers," he noted.  "Since 2007, more than a dozen poultry companies have filed for bankruptcy, been sold or simply closed their doors altogether, due in large part to high feed costs brought on by the RFS."
    Before Brown concluded, he asked the agency representatives to take special note of the extreme diversity of the panelists and industries all testifying today in opposition to the RFS - "it is striking," he said.

Changes to feed, poultry weighing rules go into effect

    Changes to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Grain Inspection, Packers & Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) rules for weighing feed and poultry have taken effect as of September 20. Its impact will be felt strongly by the poultry and swine industries, which had little time to prepare for the changes, Clayton Bailey, partner in the Dallas law firm of Bailey Brauer PPLC, said.
    Bailey, who spoke September 17 at the Poultry Production and Health Seminar about the topic, addresses some of his concerns in a video, featured on WattAgNet.com.
    Beginning September 20, GIPSA rules require that poultry be transported promptly after loading and weighed within 30 minutes after arrival at the processing plant. The rule also prohibits splitting loads in the weighing process. Other weighing and scaling provisions taking effect include the requirement that feed picked up from farms must be weighed. Another change is that feed and poultry must be reweighed upon USDA request. Previously, only poultry reweighing was included in the rules. "It's going to require the poultry industry as well as the swine industry to modify the tickets they issue when weighing feed and/or poultry," said Bailey.
    "I believe it's going to have a huge impact because the industry was only notified about 30 days before these rules go into effect. Basically the companies are going to have to run out and speak to the folks who put together the software packages for their scales, to modify the software so they can issue these tickets in compliance with these regulations."

Feed ingredient may manage coccidiosis in broilers, according to study

    Independent studies found that Original XPC many help manage coccidiosis in broilers. Original XPC is a feed ingredient from Diamond V, a fermentation product manufacturer.
    The effects of Original XPC and a coccidiostat (Salinomycin) were investigated individually and in combination at Southern Poultry Research during a coccidiosis challenge in broiler chickens. A total of 320 test birds were housed and lesion scores were conducted. Male broilers (Cobb X Cobb) were used from zero to 27 days of age. All birds received vaccinations at the hatchery for Marek's Disease (HVT:SB-1) and birds were weighed at zero, 21 and 27 days of age. Feed consumption was measured at 21 days and 27 days. The study included five treatments with eight birds per cage and eight replicate cages per treatment. Test articles were added to the feed of each treatment.
    All birds except the negative controls were challenged orally with a coccidia inoculum at 21 days. The challenge dose per bird was designed to be much greater than a routine field challenge and to produce approximately 3.0 lesion scores for each species in the infected, non-medicated control group.
    At 27 days, all birds from each cage were lesion scored. The upper, middle and cecal regions of the intestine were scored, using the system of Johnson and Reid where 0 is normal and 1, 2, 3, or 4 indicate increasing severity of infection.
    E. acervulina coccidia lesions sores were reduced in the upper gastrointestinal tract when Original XPC was included in the feed. Salinomycin inclusion further reduced lesions compared to the non-medicated, infected group. E. maxima lesion scores in the mid gut were also significantly reduced with the addition of Original XPC to the diets, and the response was equivalent to that of Salinomycin and to the combination of products. Cecal lesions reflecting E. tenella were also significantly reduced when feeding Original XPC, and an even greater response was observed when Salinomycin was included.
    Body weight gain during the coccidiosis infection was severely affected in the non-medicated, infected group. Adding Original XPC to the feed significantly improved body weight gain, and Salinomycin produced even greater gain. The combination of Original XPC and Salinomycin provided the greatest weight gain among the infected groups.
    The treatment response for feed conversion ratio was similar to body weight gains. Significant improvement was seen both with Original XPC and Salinomycin. Combining Original XPC and Salinomycin resulted in feed conversion similar to that of non-infected controls.
    Previous research had suggested that the metabolites in Diamond V Original XPC empower the bird's immune system by strengthening the instinctive immune response and supporting adaptive immunity within the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, chemical signals help suppress the inflammatory response during a challenge, and metabolites in Original XPC increase antibody production to commercial vaccines.
    Previous work also demonstrated that feeding Original XPC can reduce the incidence and severity of intestinal lesions when birds are challenged with coccidiosis. Further evidence of reduced coccidiosis stress from feeding Original XPC is the improved body weight gain and feed conversion when birds are fed Original XPC during a coccidia challenge.

Study finds feed ingredient may suppress Salmonella

    The intestinal microbial fermentation of poultry may be alternatively shifted to suppress growth of the pathogens Salmonella arizonae and Salmonella heidelberg by feed ingredient Original XPC, according to research using an in vitro poultry intestinal model. Original XPC is manufactured and marketed by Diamond V, a supplier of all-natural, microbial, fermentation-based feed additives.
    Two experiments were conducted. In the first, the level of acetate, butyrate and total volatile concentrations increased in vitro in conjunction with the inclusion of Original XPC, and the growth of Salmonella arizonae was suppressed significantly. In the second experiment, the concentrations of acetate, propionate, butyrate and total volatile fatty acids likewise increased, and the growth of Salmonella heidelberg was suppressed significantly.
    The research was presented as a poster at the recent annual Poultry Science Association meeting. Previous research demonstrated suppression of Salmonella enteritidis with Original XPC.
    Increased concentrations of volatile fatty acids in the small intestines has been linked to reduced colonization by pathogens such as Salmonella. The volatile fatty acids butyrate is of particular interest in animal agriculture because feeding butyrate has multiple known benefits to gut and overall health. Most notable among these are decrease of the inflammatory response, suppression of pathogen growth and morphological improvements in the intestinal mucosa. Recently, research showed that adding exogenous butyrate to an in vitro intestinal model challenged with Salmonella typhimurium resulted in inhibited growth of the bacteria.
    The experiments presented at the Poultry Science Association meeting had similar methodology. Under anaerobic conditions, predigested turkey diet was combined with fecal inoculum and either a control grain or Original XPC. The test tubes were challenged with either Salmonella arizonae or Salmonella arizonae and then incubated, after which the contents were analyzed for volatile fatty acids by gas chromatography. The test was replicated five times in the Salmonella arizonae experiment, 10 times in the Salmonella heidelberg experiment.
    In the Salmonella arizonae experiment, intestinal microorganisms were sourced from the fresh excreta of 10 young turkeys, and Salmonella arizonae was originated with a young turkey in a commercial operation with re-occurrence problems. In the Salmonella arizonae experiment, the intestinal microorganisms were sourced from the fresh excreta of 12 laying hens; Salmonella arizonae originated with a human being with an egg-associated illness.

New research tests enzyme additives in poultry feed to improve digestibility

      In Dr. Jason Lee’s study on the effects of feed with various combinations of enzyme additives and available phosphorus, 500 male chicks were individually weighed at seven and 14 days. Lee also analyzed the chicken litter the chicks produced for residual phosphorus.
    Dr. Jason Lee compares the enzyme additives he's testing in chicken broiler feed to the probiotics now commonly added to human food, such as yogurt. Like probiotics, the enzymes he's testing improve digestibility of the food the chicken eats, acting within the gut, said Lee, who is a poultry scientist with Texas A&M AgriLife Research at College Station.
    "And like probiotics, the enzymes naturally occur in nature," he said.
    The analogy is imperfect, he said, as the probiotics added to yogurt and other foods to aid digestion are live bacteria, while enzymes are not alive at all, but merely simple proteins.
    Improving digestibility of poultry rations is important for commercial producers for two reasons, Lee said.
    The first reason is improved digestibility means improved feed efficiency - less feed is required for each pound of weight gain.
    Digestibility of soybean meal by poultry is already high, 80 to 85 percent, according to Lee.
    "But we want to make that much higher," he said.
    According to the National Chicken Council, in 2010, U.S. companies produced nearly 9 billion chickens for meat consumption, most of which were broilers, with a small percentage from breeding stock and spent hen egg-layer flocks. This equates to more than 5 billion pounds of meat, most of which was consumed domestically.
    "The poultry industry is very competitive," he said. "With feeds sources such as soybean meal and corn going up every year, only a small percentage of increase in efficiency can mean big savings to the industry."
    The second reason why improving feed efficiency is important is an environmental one, Lee said.
    About 9 billion birds produce large amounts of manure, which when mixed with spilled feed, feathers and bedding material, is called "chicken litter."
    Chicken litter is primarily used as fertilizer, but because nitrogen is less concentrated than chemical fertilizers, transportation costs usually limit its use to nearby farms. And the nitrogen in chicken litter can be lost quickly, according to Lee.
    Nitrate runoff is usually not a problem with chicken litter fertilizer as it is with manure from other confined animal operations. But phosphorus can be, he said.
    "Phosphorus is an essential nutrient required for proper bone development and for efficient poultry production," Lee said. "The failure to meet a bird's requirement of phosphorus can lead to many bird-health problems, including reduced bird performance, increased leg disorders and increased bird mortality."
    To avoid these bird health problems, companies used to include a "a safety margin" of phosphorus when formulating feeds, Lee said. The over-supplemented could lead to the excess ended up in the chicken litter used as fertilizer. Crops can only use so much phosphorus in a given time, and this excess ending up in the water table through run-off.
    Environmental concerns, as well as rising costs of inorganic phosphate sources have motivated producers "to consider alternative strategies to reduce the total phosphorous concentrations in broiler diets," Lee said.
    The main strategy utilized to decrease the levels of phosphorus required in broiler diets is the use of enzymes that utilize the phosphorus in plant sources, such as corn and soybean, according to Lee.
    A form of phosphorus called phytate can account for as much as 70 percent of the total phosphorus found in plants, he said. However, poultry do not have the ability to digest phytate. But ruminant animals, such as beef cattle, have bacteria in their rumens that naturally produce an enzyme called phytase that allows them to convert the phytate into organic phosphorus.
    Phytase can be relatively cheaply and easily produced and added to poultry feed, but that solves only one aspect of the problem.
    "Another anti-nutritive factor found in cereal grains used in broiler diets include the presence of non-starch polysaccharides - NSP, which are fibrous material found in plant cell walls," Lee said. "Chickens lack the digestive capacity of ruminant animals and the presence of NSP in the diet increases intestinal viscosity resulting in decreased digestibility of the diet."
    Fortunately, according to Lee, another enzyme, carbohydrase, can help increase digestibility of high fiber broiler diets. Both enzymes need be added at low rates, typically from 0.25 to 1 pound per ton of feed.
    But a question remained: Which strains of the two enzymes were best combinations for chicken health and feed conversion efficiency?
    To determine this, Lee has been conducting studies comparing how multiple levels of phytase affects the bio-availability of phytate with and without non-starch polysaccharides. The feed tested was a combination of corn and soybean meal with added vitamins and micronutrients - a standard poultry ration.
    The relationship between the effects of the two enzymes turned out to be more complicated than expected. Non-starch polysaccharides increased the bioavailability of phosphorus but at only one of the three levels of phytase concentrations tested.
    The results of his study will give commercial poultry producers information they need to fine-tune feed mixture to reduce phosphorus runoff from chicken litter without endangering flock health, Lee said.

Animal health company hosts enzyme symposium


    DSM, an animal health company, will host a symposium on substrates for exogenous enzymes during the 2013 meeting of the Poultry Science Association to be held in San Diego, Calif., from July 22-25. Entitled "Possible Substrates for Exogenous Enymes," the event will be one of a number of meetings and workshops to be staged at the Poultry Science Association 2013 on July 22 at 1 p.m.
    The use of exogenous enzymes has increased considerably in the past 20 years to support animal performance and feed cost savings while delivering improved animal health and enhanced sustainability. However, questions still remain concerning how much enzymes can potentially release from different substrates and also the results of this effect.
    Before being able to characterize the effect of enzymes, it is essential to understand the full range of possible substrates available in livestock feed. It is also critical to understand how the substrates themselves can be changed according to the quality and composition of the feed and the requirements of the specific livestock group. Such changes do not affect the quantity of substrate available in the feed, but they do affect the digestibility of certain nutrients. This increases the space in which enzymes can act, which in turn heightens the effectiveness of their action. This aspect of the use of enzymes in animal feed has received inadequate attention in the past. The DSM symposium aims to readdress this balance.
    Chaired by Dr. José Otávio B. Sorbara of DSM and moderated by Dr. Roselina Angel, assistant professor at the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences at the University of Maryland, the symposium includes contributions on "Fiber and NSP Content and Variation", "Phytate Concentration and Variation in Different Crops", "Starch: Is it a possible substrate?", "Protein and Amino Acids: What is Undigestible?" and "Formulating Poultry Diets Based on their Undigestible Fractions."
    Dr. Steve Koenig, executive director of the Poultry Science Association, says, "The Poultry Science Association is excited about collaborating with DSM to present the very best scientific information in a symposium that will draw much needed attention to the impact of feedstuff variability on the efficiency and predictability of exogenous enzymes."

Low oil DDGS value in poultry rations needs to be re-evaluated


    Low oil DDGS products can hold a place in poultry rations, but it will have less value as oil is taken out, said Dr. Sally Noll, University of Minnesota, and Dr. Sheila E. Purdum, University of Nebraska, during the pre-show Nutrition and Poultry Health Symposium at the 2013 Midwest Poultry Federation Convention.
    Over the past five years, DDGS have become a mainstay in poultry rations, increasing to as much as 10 percent of many diets. The oil content has presented a highly available source of energy for poultry. However, as ethanol plants are extracting oil from DDGS for other purposes, the value of DDGS energy needs to be re-evaluated, according to Noll and Purdum.
    Noll presented study results on the impact of feeding DDGS that vary in fat content through de-oiling on finishing market turkey performance, especially feed conversion. Purdum presented research conducted in laying hens that looked at the effects of low oil DDGS, incorporated at 20 percent of the ration, on feed intake and egg production.
    In summary, other sources of energy will need to increase in the rations at economic prices to provide the energy needs of the bird. Low oil DDGS products are more likely to fit in layer rations, which are lower in metabolizable energy compared to meat bird rations such as broilers or turkeys. Research shows that most laying hen rations likely have enough flex in their metabolizable energy formulation to allow for 4-6 kcal/kg drops in energy, with hens adjusting feed intake slightly up.
    Producers of low oil DDGS should not expect as high of economic value associated with low oil products compared to higher oil products in the poultry feed industry, said Noll and Purdum.

Norel studies bioavailability of zinc sources in poultry


    Norel has conducted a study comparing the bioavailability of different zinc sources in poultry, saying that a better understanding of the mineral's bioavailability is required to fine tune its supplementation levels.
    It is necessary to use zinc efficiently, according to Norel, since it is both an essential trace mineral and a heavy metal. Zinc level (and bioavailability) varies significantly between feed ingredients, and so does zinc intake. As a consequence, comfortable safety margins are used, leading to dietary zinc levels being higher than recommended in poultry.
    In the study, 300 Cobb broilers (50 percent males and 50 percent females) from 1 to 35 days of age were used. The experimental design included five dietary treatments: Basal diet (control); Zn-sulphate at 150 ppm; zinc methionine (Biomet zinc) at 150 ppm; Zn-sulphate at 450 ppm and Biomet zinc at 450 ppm. Starter feeds were fed from 0 to 21 days and grower feeds from 22 to 35 days of age.
    Results indicate that from 21 to 35 days of age, birds receiving Biomet zinc at 150 ppm increased the adg 13.2 percent more than the control group, the rest of treatments being in an intermediate situation. Also, birds with Biomet (150 or 450) and Zn-sulphate 450 had a higher pancreas and bones zinc deposition than the control group.

Key points for future of poultry production highlighted at World Nutrition Forum


    The role of technology in the poultry industry was one of the focuses at the World Nutrition Forum, held in Singapore in October by Biomin.
    To meet growing consumer demand, address consumers’ concerns, and succeed in a high-cost environment, greater use of technology will have to be made by the poultry industry. Among key factors to emerge from the forum’s discussions were:

    • The use of genomics to select for welfare traits;
    • Improvements in housing to meet regional differences;
    • The use of environmental factors as a basis for selection;
    • The use of nutritional products to reduce the negative effects of antinutritional aspects of feed and mycotoxins; and
    • Employing incremental and transformational research.

Bangladesh poultry feed industry calls for corn export ban


    Bangladesh's poultry feed industry has called for a ban on corn exports in an attempt to stabilize the domestic prices of poultry and eggs, according to reports, saying that rising feed prices will otherwise continue to affect the market.
    Poultry feed prices have increased 80 to 100 percent in the last month, said Feed Industry Association of Bangladesh President Ihtehsham B. Shahjahan. Right now, the government allows for conditional corn exports — an exporter can sell to another country if they can get a minimum price of US$325 or more per metric ton.
    Breeders' Association of Bangladesh President Moshiur Rahman said there has been a price increase in corn, soya and other raw materials for poultry feed in the international market due to a significant decrease in corn production caused by natural disasters. As a result, the prices of eggs and chicken on the Bangladesh market have increased by nearly 40 percent in the last year. "If the government does not impose ban on the export of the locally produced maize, the poultry feed will be costlier and the prices of poultry birds and eggs will rise further," said Rahman.

Industry report offers optimistic future for livestock, poultry feed


    Joel G. Newman, president and CEO, American Feed Industry Association, released the study Future Patterns of U.S. Feed Grains, Biofuels, and Livestock and Poultry Feeding today at the Federation of Animal Science Societies Joint Annual Meeting in Phoenix. The study was presented in tandem with Robert Wisner, retired University Professor Emeritus, Department of Economics, Iowa State University. Wisner was principal investigator for the study.
    According to the report, the authors “reviewed recent trends in the U.S. and the global bioenergy, grain, feed, and livestock industries. The report focuses on the impact of development of the U.S. bioenergy industry on grain and feed availability for the livestock sector as well as industry profitability, production, efficiency, demand, and the future of the feed livestock sector.”
    Some of the observations made by the report include:
    • In the next three to seven years, supplies of corn should be adequate, if U.S. corn yields return to their longer-term upward trend.
    • Uncertainties that need to be monitored by the feed-livestock sector beyond 2020 are 1) China’s demand for corn; and 2) the possibility of a second-stage growth in corn processing for biofuel.
    • The primary way that the poultry and livestock sectors will adjust to biofuels expansion and international competition will be by finding and using more efficient cost-reducing production methods.
    • Pork will most likely continue its growth if U.S. corn yields are close to normal for the next three to seven years.
    • If ethanol demand slows and U.S. corn yields increase, the dairy industry should be able to return to long-term expansion as well as to increases in efficiency and productivity.
    • An increase in beef cow numbers and beef production can be expected if feed supplies are available at a reasonable cost. However, other factors will likely put pressure on the industry to increase production and feed conversion efficiencies.
    • The production of lower oil and de-oiled DDGS will require research on how to use these products most efficiently.
    Additional areas covered in the report include Food-Population Issues and Possible Climate Change Issues, among others.
    The Institute for Feed Education and Research provided a grant on behalf of the American Feed Industry Association to the Council on Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics in order to conduct this review.

Modest growth for Brazilian poultry feed production in 2012


    Demand for broiler feed in Brazil is expected to rise by 3.1 percent in 2012, while that for layer feed is forecast to be a little under 3 percent higher, according to the Brazilian Feed Industry Association Sindirações.
    Broiler feed production accounted for 50 percent of total feed output in 2011; however, the first few months of 2012 have witnessed lower prices for birds and an oversupply of poultry meat, weakening demand for feed. Consequently, through the end of 2012, broiler feed output is expected to grow by a modest 3.1 percent to stand at 33.2 million metric tons.
    Similar results are expected for layer feed. While consumption of eggs on the home market continues to grow, egg exports have been dropping. By the end of 2012, layer feed production is forecast to stand at some 5.1 million tons, an increase of less than 3 percent.
    Overall, feed production across species is expected to end 2012 some 2.8 percent higher and stand at 66.2 million metric tons of feed and 2.58 million metric tons of mineral supplements. In 2011, output grew by 5.2 percent.

USPOULTRY studies animal protein meals in poultry diets


    The U.S. Poultry & Egg Association and the USPOULTRY Foundation have completed a funded research project at Auburn University on the evaluation of animal protein meals on nutritional quality and microbial profile of the gastrointestinal tract.
    Variation in amino acid profiles and phosphorus levels in animal protein meals results in industry formulation of poultry diets based on “best estimates” because of limited scientific data. Multiple samples of animal protein meals were evaluated to determine crude protein, amino acid profile, phosphorus bioavailability and their relationship to different measures of digestibility. Microbial activity of the gastrointestinal tract was also investigated. Pepsin digestibility and the digestible enzyme assay were highly correlated with the standard ileal amino acid digestibility measure for all amino acids in 20 animal protein meals. From these data prediction, equations were calculated.
    Microbial intestinal activity was found to be affected more by age (early) than by protein source. Phosphorus content of 10 animal protein meals tested was highly variable and no differences were found in bone strength measurements, suggesting that phosphorus in animal protein meals is readily available.

Maryland may be first state to ban arsenic in chicken feed


    Maryland is set to become the first U.S. state to ban the use of additives containing arsenic in chicken feed, joining Canada and the EU who already prohibit the practice, according to reports.
    Maryland's House of Delegates and Senate approved the legislation at the beginning of April and placed it before Governor Martin O'Malley on April 9. In 2011, the Food and Drug Administration tested 100 chickens by giving them feed containing the additive roxarsone, an arsenic-based drug used to fight animal parasites. Half the chickens later showed trace amounts of inorganic arsenic in their livers. Arsenic is a known carcinogen, and the finding prompted Pfizer to suspend sales of roxarsone. Perdue Farms stopped using the additive years ago, and McDonald's does not allow its suppliers to use it.
    Maryland Delegate Charles J. Otto, who opposes the legislation, said that arsenic occurs naturally and shows up in extremely low amounts in chickens. "It's not an environmental threat or human health threat," said Otto.
