Avian influenza leads to fewer shell eggs broken in May

The number of federally inspected shell eggs broken for egg products dropped significantly during May, largely affected as a result of the 2015 avian influenza outbreak.
According to the USDA's Egg Products report, which was released on June 30, 166 million dozen shell eggs were broken during May, down 15 percent from the 195 million dozen eggs broken during May 2014, and down 9 percent from the 181 million dozen eggs broken during April 2014.
Also contributing to the fewer reported broken eggs in May 2015 was that the USDA’s May reporting period was one day shorter in 2015 than it was in 2014. The May 2014 reporting period included 22 weekdays, 5 Saturdays and 1 holiday, while the May 2015 reporting period included 21 weekdays, 5 Saturdays and 1 holiday.
The Egg Products report also revealed that cumulative total edible product from eggs broken in 2015 to date has been 1,167 million pounds, down slightly from the amount recorded during this time span in 2014.
Avian influenza to date has affected more than 48 million birds in the United States, according to the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) with a large percentage of those avian influenza cases impacting layer flocks in Iowa and other Midwestern states.

US shell eggs broken up 3 percent in April

U.S. shell eggs broken totaled 169 million dozen during April, up 3 percent from April 2011 but 1 percent below the 171 million broken in March, according to the latest U.S. Department of Agriculture numbers.
Of that number, 127.4 million pounds of the edible product were whole eggs, 60.8 million pounds were egg whites and 30.2 million pounds were egg yolks. During calendar year 2012 through April, shell eggs broken totaled 676 million dozen, up 1 percent from the comparable period in 2011. To date, cumulative total edible product from eggs broken in 2012 was 880.6 million pounds, up 1 percent from 2011. Of that number, 528.6 million pounds were whole eggs, 233.3 million pounds were egg whites and 118.8 million pounds were egg yolks.

US shell eggs broken up 7 percent in February

U.S. shell eggs broken totaled 166 million dozen during February, up 7 percent from February 2011 but 3 percent below the 170 million broken in January, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's latest numbers.
In January and February combined, shell eggs broken totaled 336 million dozen, up 3 percent from the comparable period in 2011. To date, cumulative total edible product from eggs broken in 2012 was 438 million pounds, up 4 percent from 2011. Of the product in February, 129 million pounds were whole eggs, 57.43 million pounds were egg whites and 29.31 million pounds were egg yolks. Cumulatively, the edible product for 2012 has broken out to 263.4 million pounds of whole eggs, 115.43 million pounds of egg whites and 59.41 million pounds of egg yolks.

US shell eggs broken up first half 2011

From January through July 2011, shell eggs broken in the U.S. totaled 1.21 billion dozen, up 2% from the comparable period in 2010, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Cumulative total edible product from eggs broken in 2011 through July was 1.57 billion pounds, up 2% from 2010. Of this, 946.7 million pounds were whole egg products, 411.2 million pounds were egg white products and 210.1 million pounds were egg yolk products.
Shell eggs broken totaled 180 million dozen during July 2011, up slightly from July 2010, but 3% below the 185 million broken in June 2011.
