Egg industry leaders tour Hy-Line International

Hy-Line International, the world leader in layer poultry genetics, hosted nearly 60 egg industry leaders in April at its research and development campus in Dallas Center, IA. The conference rooms were alive with questions, as participants learned about Hy-Line’s advances in molecular genetics and genetic selection from Hy-Line’s research and development team.
They also saw Hy-Line’s Egg Quality Laboratory in action. “We were honored to host leaders of the egg industry to share and discuss Hy-Line’s innovations in poultry genetics,” said Jonathan Cade, president of Hy-Line International. This tour was offered as part of the Egg Industry Center’s 7th Annual Egg Industry Leadership Forum in Des Moines, IA.

WVPA Congress concludes with success in France

The World Veterinary Poultry Association's (WVPA) XVIIIth Congress that was held in Nantes, France from August 19-23 was a "triumph," according to WVPA global president, Dr. Trevor Bagust.
The theme of "viral and bacterial enteric diseases" was the focus for the Avian Pathology Lecture, presented by Professor Filip van Immersel of Belgium.
"The French organizing team did WVPA proud with a program of some 500 oral and poster presentations and their hospitality and social events were exceptional. Nobody can have left this Congress without a better understanding of key topical issues such as influenza, campylobacter, in ovo vaccination and antibiotic resistance," Bagust said.
The event's main industry supporters, Ceva, MSD Animal Health, Merial and Zoetis, also praised the quality of the papers and posters. Another event highlight was the induction of the first 52 members elected to the WVPA's new Hall of Honor. The Bart Rispens Award (supported by MSD Animal Health) and the WVPA-Zoetis Young Poultry Veterinarian Awards were also presented.
"Hosting WVPA's XVIIIth Congress was an honor, which was made all the more memorable because we had poultry health experts attending from 79 countries and we were particularly pleased to have had a good turnout from Asia," the French organizer, Nicolas Eterradossi, added.
In 2014 WVPA will be hosting Regional Meetings in Asia and Europe.

18th World Veterinary Poultry Association Congress begins in France

The successful bid from the British Veterinary Poultry Association will see the next European WVPA Congress held in Edinburgh.

The World Veterinary Poultry Association's XVIII Congress has started in Nantes, France, and runs until August 23.
There will be 145 oral communications given over 16 sessions and over 400 posters are being presented. Topics covered at the event range from the safety of poultry products, to viral and bacterial diseases, education and technology transfer and family poultry production.
Organized by GF-AMVA, the French branch of the World Veterinary Poultry Association, the event is thought to have attracted 1,250 attendees from around the world. This year's congress is hosting branches of the WVPA from Malaysia, Korea, Pakistan and the Philippines for the first time.
The next WVPA Congress will be in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2015.
It's a destination, not just a conference
The 2017 event will return to Europe, and the first day of the 2013 congress saw a decision taken on which will be the next European host country and city, with Budapest, Edinburgh and Verona in the running.
The British bid won the day. The next European home for the World Veterinary Poultry Association Congress will be Edinburgh.
The British team, using the slogan "It's a destination, not just a conference," noted that it offered a strong scientific program along with all accommodation being within walking distance from the event's venues. The congress will follow the Edinburgh Festival Fringe -- the world's largest art festival -- with a welcome reception held in Edinburgh Castle. 

Poultry safety conference registration available

The 2013 National Safety Conference for the Poultry Industry is a three-day event designed for poultry facility and corporate safety personnel. The conference is sponsored by the Agriculture Technology Research Program at the Georgia Tech Research Institute, United States Poultry and Egg Association, Georgia Poultry Federation, National Chicken Council, and National Turkey Federation. This year's conference will be held August 19-21, at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation, Amelia Island, Fla.
"This year's program will focus on issues pertinent to new and experienced poultry industry safety professionals. Plant and corporate safety and health personnel will have the opportunity to listen to expert speakers from industry, government, and a keynote speaker from the Occupational Health and Safety Administration as they discuss current information related to plant and worker safety," said program committee chairman Reggie McLee, Wayne Farms.

Poultry conference registration available

The 18th World Veterinary Poultry Association Congress will be held August 19-23 in Nantes, France. The program includes conferences, workshops, technical visits and commercial exhibitions, as well as a social program.
Visitors can listen to 145 speeches  spread over 16 sessions with simultaneous translation from English into French. More than 400 posters will be presented during the four days of the congress, and one poster will be awarded a monetary prize in each session.
Visits to an animal husbandry applied research station, a modern broiler slaughterhouse, a genetic selection company, France's largest free-range poultry cooperative and a new low energy poultry farm are available Friday.

Poultry conference held for Turkey, Middle East and Africa

Nutrition, health and overall bird management were top of the agenda at the Eighth Annual Ross Turkey, Middle East and Africa Distributor Customer Focus Team Meeting, held from May 8-10. Ross is a broiler chicken brand owned by poultry producer Aviagen.
Over 25 delegates attended the meeting in Antalya, Turkey, and were welcomed by Regional Technical Manager, Puzant Dakessian. The opening day included discussions on chick quality. Services and support were also discussed during the three day event. Attendees had the chance to join in hands-on workshops. One workshop showed how to check fertility in 12 day old incubated eggs, while the second looked at fresh eggs. Real egg break outs were done to underline the methods being discussed.
Dakessian said, "Our objective at these meetings is to bring together global and regional knowledge and best practice. It helps us discuss various issues and find solutions based on experience, to pass on to our distributors and their customers as well as assess and compare our overall Ross product performances. Ensuring best practise is always a great way to guarantee strong flock performance, hence the need to look at the support we give to our distributors and customers as well as the latest advice.
"The poultry industry in Turkey, the Middle East and Africa continues to grow and expand despite all the regional political turmoil and increased production costs. We are lucky to be in an industry which produces affordable protein for human consumption and also to be in a region of significant growth in the population and hence in demand, which keeps attracting international breeding companies and independent entrepreneurs to invest in the region for the future."
Individual national round-ups from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Iraq and Sudan were available. Other meetings covered topics including the Aviagen SPIDES technology and an overview of the Aviagen Schools in the United States and Europe. Presentations and discussions on controlling major diseases were available as well.

Registration for poultry certification workshop now open

The Professional Animal Auditor Certification Organization announced the opening of registration for its Poultry Welfare Auditor Training Course, set for June 4-6, 2013, at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.
The first step in the process of becoming a certified poultry welfare auditor, the popular three day course features an impressive array of instructors and corporate sponsors and offers trainees an opportunity for hands-on experience at broiler, layer or turkey facilities. At these sites, they will perform mock audits and see welfare criteria demonstrated in the context of day-to-day operations, before returning to campus to take a written examination over the course materials.
More than a dozen industry stakeholders have committed financial support to this endeavor, including Butterball, Cobb, Hybrid Turkeys, Hy-Line, Jennie-O Turkey Store, Koch Foods, Novus, OK Foods, OSI Group, Pacific Vet Group, Pilgrim's, Techno-Catch, Tyson Foods, U.S. Poultry & Egg Association and Walmart.
"We're delighted to be able to again offer this important training here in the heart of American poultry production," says organization chairman Dr. Karen Christensen of O.K. The Professional Animal Auditor Certification Organization is an organization of five animal industry organizations with extensive expertise on best management practices and current science in animal agriculture.  The organization's purpose is to promote the humane treatment of animals through education and certification of animal auditors as well as the review and/or certification of animal audit instruments, assessments and programs.

Poultry safety conference announces new partnership

The Agricultural Technology Research Program at the Georgia Tech Research Institute and the United States Poultry and Egg Association are excited to announce a new partnership for jointly hosting the National Safety Conference for the Poultry Industry, with additional support provided by the Georgia Poultry Federation, the National Chicken Council, and the National Turkey Federation -- who, along with the Georgia Tech Research Institute, were founding sponsors of the conference. This year's conference will take place August 19-21, at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation on Amelia Island, Fla.
For the past 28 years, the Agricultural Technology Research Program has served as the sole coordinator of this event. However, with the United States Poultry and Egg Association's larger offering of educational and technical seminars, the organizations decided to partner together to maximize the effectiveness and reach of the National Safety Conference. 
"The Agricultural Technology Research Program has long had a strong working relationship with the Agricultural Technology Research Program, and it was only natural for us to partner together to provide the best possible programming for the only safety conference specifically for the poultry industry," said Doug Britton, of the Agricultural Technology Research Program at Georgia Tech. 
The conference is designed specifically for poultry plant and corporate safety personnel, and it will continue as a three-day event with key presentations on important industry topics and updates on government policy.  Other highlights include breakout sessions for discussing best practices and current challenges, as well as networking and knowledge exchange opportunities with other safety and health professionals.  The technical content for the conference will continue to be guided by an advisory panel of industry safety and health representatives.
USPOULTRY will assume responsibility for managing the logistics of the conference including the website information, on-line registration, and on-site arrangements. The Agricultural Technology Research Program will continue to play an active role in working with the advisory committee to develop the content and select the topics and speakers for the conference. 
The conference registration and hotel registration will open on June 24. 

24th World’s Poultry Congress begins in Salvador, Brazil

The 24th World's Poultry Congress of the World's Poultry Science Association opened on August 5 with a ceremony in the Auditorium Iemanjá of the Bahia Convention Center in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. The opening also included the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the association, and was attended by Dr. Bob Pym, association president; Dr. Edir N. Silva, president of the Congress; Jorge Alberto Mendes Ribeiro Filho, Brazil minister of agriculture, animal industry and supply; Jacques Wagner, governor of the state of Bahia; and Francisco Turra, president of the Brazilian Poultry Producers Association, UBABEF, among others.
Pym referred to the Olympic Games currently taking place in London, calling the Congress the Poultry Olympics — not only due to the importance of the event itself, but because it is being carried out in Brazil, one of the leading global players in the field. Moreover, there are 93 countries being represented, which expresses the global recognition of the event.
"It is our responsibility to continue with efficient and sustainable poultry production through science and technology," said Silva. Brazil accounts for 41 percent of the world broiler market. "The combination of natural resources, such as land and water, and human resources, research and educational institutions, has made Brazil one of the largest producers in the world," he said.
Brazil’s domestic market accounts for two-thirds of production, while the remaining one-third contributes to the food security of more than 150 markets worldwide, said Turra, who also said that this growth is fully sustainable in its three aspects: economic, social and environmental. "From an economic point of view, we have natural resources and grains, and good climate for poultry production,” he said. “Among the major producers, Brazil is the only one that has not registered a single case of bird flu. It also has a low production of carbon dioxide, lower than in developed countries. In Brazil, a chicken produces half the emissions of a chicken in England."
Finally, the governor of Bahia invited businessmen to invest in his state, considering that it is produces less than is consumed there. 

Ensuring food safety in the poultry production chain

"Ensuring Food Safety in the Poultry Production Chain" is a one-day forum that will educate professionals on how to create an effective food safety culture and establish standardized policies and inspection systems for poultry production.
The event, organized by Poultry International China Edition and WATT Publishing, is being supported by the China Animal Agriculture Association, CP Group, Yum! Brands Inc. China Division and VNU Exhibitions. The forum will look at such topics as food safety in China, management systems for food safety and quality in the U.S. and EU, safe feed and feed additives.

XXII Central American and Caribbean Poultry Congress in Panama begins

The XXII Central American and Caribbean Poultry Congress in Panama began May 23 with an opening ceremony and continues through May 25. Conferences begin May 24 and cover topics such as poultry health, incubation, nutrition, processing and handling.
Nearly 200 companies are exhibiting with information about poultry equipment, genetics, pharmaceuticals, feed additives, incubation, chemicals and feed equipment. Congress attendees are from throughout the region, Latin America, the U.S., Canada, Europe and elsewhere. WATT Publishing and Industria Avícola are also present at the congress in Booth 41.

2010 Information Systems Seminar held in Nashville

The 2010 Information Systems Seminar, hosted by the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association's Poultry & Egg Institute, was held in Nashville, Tenn.
The seminar focused on the latest advancements in information technology, including hardware, software and new applications for keeping IT systems up-to-date. Topics discussed included physical security, business intelligence tools, global food safety initiatives and management skills.
