India declares itself free of avian flu

According to reports, India has issued notification to the World Organization for Animal Health (OEI) declaring the country is free of Avian Influenza (H5N1). Such a declaration can be made after three months without further virus outbreaks.
There have been no signs of the infection since the May 2007 incident in the Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal.
To eliminate the flu virus, the country used control measures that included slaughtering the entire bird population and destroying eggs and other materials possibly infected. Measures also restricted movement of birds and poultry products.
The country stressed officials will remain vigilant with surveillance practices.
