Zambia's poultry sector is now supplying 60% of the country's meat requirement following a shortage of beef on the market, according to the Poultry Association of Zambia.
The beef shortage has caused prices of the product to rise out of the reach of many consumers, leading to pressure on the poultry industry as those consumers turn to the more affordable meat. “We have seen the rise in consumption of poultry products which is good, as it will stimulate growth in the poultry industry," said Matthews Ngosa, Association executive manager. "The demand for poultry products will continue to increase as long as the beef situation does not improve."
So far, according to Ngosa, the price of poultry has remained relatively stable, in spite of the high cost of production, 75% of which comes from stockfeed.
