House of Raeford Farms has set July 27 as the closing date for a turkey processing plant in Raeford, N.C.
The company announced in March that it would close the plant, but had not yet set a date. The move is part of the company's strategy to phase out of the commodity turkey business to place more of its focus on broiler operations and value-added chicken and turkey products.
The closure of the plant will put about 950 people out of work, according to House of Raeford spokesman Dave Witter. Severance packages are being offered to employees who stay until the plant closes.
House of Raeford will also be closing its turkey hatchery in Rose Hill, N.C., as part of its new business plan.
