Hendrix Genetics plans to build a hatchery for its layer breeds in Grand Island, Nebraska.
The hatchery is being built to meet the company’s growing demand for the Hendrix ISA division Isa Brown, Bovans Brown, Shaver White, Dekalb White and Bovans White laying chickens.
The potential $10 million hatchery will be situated on 20 acres at Grand Island’s Platte Valley Industrial Park-East, reported the Grand Island Independent. When completed, it will produce 24 million chicks per year.
Hendrix-ISA Managing Director Peter Mumm said that the company has 40 hatcheries across the world, but only two in the United States. Since one is located in Virginia and the other in Pennsylvania, a Midwestern location was deemed ideal because chicks could be delivered across the U.S. in one day.
The hatchery plans were announced during a special ceremony in Grand Island, with Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts in attendance.
“This is a great win-win for the city of Grand Island, for Hendrix-ISA, for the State of Nebraska to be able to expand the agribusiness right here in our state and in your community to be able to create more jobs and get that investment," said Ricketts. "This really is a great day for the city of Grand Island and the State of Nebraska."

Smart redevelopment paying off for Kysylzhar-Kus
Following new investment and a repurposing of facilities from egg to broiler meat production, Khazakhstan’s Kysylzhar-Kus in the Pavlodar region is on track to meet 70 per cent of local demand for broiler meat in its first phase of operations, with a recently commissioned Smart hatchery from Pas Reform delivering strong performance.
The new hatchery includes SmartSetPro setters, each with a capacity of 57,600 hatching eggs, SmartHatchPro hatchers and a complete HVAC system to combat the high cost of energy in the Northern region of Kazakhstan. The hatchery’s first chicks were from Ross breed hatching eggs, supplied by Karagandinskaya PF.
The new facility, which also incorporates nine broiler houses, a slaughterhouse, feed mill and plant for meat and bone meal production, is served by its own boiler and water supply and has created employment for 130 people.
Talking about its production, General Director Nikolai Rudenko says, “The first phase will produce 4,000t of poultry meat per year, which provides for 70 per cent of local market demand. Phase two expansion will double capacity to 8,000t, which will fully meet the needs of local consumers.”
Rudenko concludes, “To perform strongly in the market, we opted for Smart incubation technologies from Pas Reform to give our new broiler operations the best start. We are delighted both with the hatchery installation and with the dedicated support that we have received from Pas Reform’s project team throughout the whole project.”
In addition to installing and commissioning Kysylzhar-Kus’ new incubation and HVAC systems, Pas Reform Russia has provided project engineering services and will continue to support the hatchery with regular field visits and technical support from Pas Reform Academy.

House of Raeford’s Columbia Farms building new hatchery
Columbia Farms of Georgia, an affiliate of House of Raeford Farms, plans to construct a new $16 million chicken hatchery. A site for the new facility has not been finalized, but it will be located in the Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, area and is expected to take 15 to 18 months to construct.
“It is the right time to make a significant upgrade to our live production operations, and all of that starts with the early life of our birds,” said Jim Mabe, West Columbia/Leesville complex manager. “The result of this investment will be to provide our growers with a chick that is very consistent in size and quality.”
The hatchery will contain the most modern equipment available, designed to produce a healthy, viable chick. A single-stage incubation system will allow for steady temperature control and consequently a higher hatch rate and better quality. The entire operation will be fully automated providing for an extremely high level of sanitary conditions and a very efficient incubation and hatching process.
The West Columbia/Leesville complex, one of five operated by House of Raeford, currently works with 87 contract growers producing over 40 million chickens annually. The current operation includes a hatchery in Batesburg-Leesville; a feed mill in Monetta, South Carolina; and a processing plant located in West Columbia.

Verbeek hosts successful Polish poultry farmers' seminar
Verbeek Hatchery organized and hosted a two-day poultry seminar for its Polish customers in March. During the practical session, the participants visited the Verbeek hatchery and rearing farms. In the theoretical part of the seminar, the visitors (owners and personnel of rearing and laying farms) from all over Poland, were informed about the Verbeek rearing and laying strategy, including water, feed and lighting management.
The program, featuring a busy schedule, was organized by Natalia Kaik and Karolina Poniatowska, the Verbeek sales agents in Poland. After a word of welcome, Sales Manager Hans van Leeuwen gave information about the Verbeek organization and the strategic choices of Verbeek Hatchery Holland. Jac Matijsen, technical manager of Verbeek, gave further details such as the start-up of chicks, the feed strategy and the ideal climate conditions.
Later on in the programme, there were demonstrations of the water and lighting strategy, along with details about hygienic measures during the rearing process. The scheduling of vaccinations was also discussed.

The entire group started to shower, according to the hygiene regulations, before seeing how Verbeek puts its rearing strategy into practice. There was also attention for the startup of day-old chicks in practice. A visit to a rearing farm with aviary/cage rearing gave a clear idea of the Verbeek feed, water and lighting strategy in practice.
The Verbeek Polish poultry seminar customers were very enthusiastic and there were a lot of questions. They all gave positive feedback about the program. "We can look back on a successful seminar, in which our customers gained a great deal of information about Verbeek and its approach. The Verbeek team is very pleased to share its know-how and expertise with their customers," said van Leeuwen.

Italian hatchery partners with equipment supplier
Italy's Occhiodoro Hatchery is consolidating its position as a supplier of premium eggs, layers and high quality day old chicks with a renewed investment in hatchery technologies from Pas Reform.
Established by Guiseppe Occhiodoro in the 1960s, the family owned and operated business first adopted Pas Reform incubation technologies more than 50 years ago. Today, the company produces around 5 million varied breed day-old-chicks a year, including Red Shaver, Naked Neck Red and Grey, Grey Kabir, Red Kabir, White HI-Y and Red Color Pac, for the domestic market.
The hatchery's recent investment includes SmartSet Setters with Pas Reform's SmartTray 150 setter tray incorporating Microban antimicrobial technology, a web-based SmartCenter hatchery information system, and the upgrade of the existing hatchers with carbon dioxide-level controllers, also integrated to deliver real-time data through SmartCenter.
In an operation that covers nearly 35 hectares, Occhiodoro works in every aspect of poultry farming, from egg production and breeding, to the production of organic feed, with policies to safeguard bio-security throughout the company's operations.
"We are finding already that automated incubation programs and the careful monitoring of carbon dioxide levels in our setters is producing significant benefits in terms of chick quality", says hatchery manager Achille Cristiani.

Aviagen releases 'How To' hatchery tutorial on egg turning
Poultry breeder Aviagen has released the 8th publication in its "How To" series of hatchery tutorials, aimed at providing practical advice for hatchery managers and supervisors. The latest "How To" document focuses on egg turning in the hatchery, which impacts embryo development and hatchability.
According to Dinah Nicholson, Aviagen global manager - Hatchery Development and Support:
“Egg turning problems are a frequent observation when members of the hatchery specialist team make customer visits. While complete failures are still rare, it is surprisingly common to see some trollies which have not been properly attached to the turning mechanism or have less than optimal turning angles.
“Turning angles can be very badly adrift, especially in older units or very large incubators, which may struggle when fully loaded. Turning angles need to be between 38 and 45 degrees, otherwise you can have raised embryo mortality with knock on damage to hatchability.”
The "How To" document contains a check list for setters and advice on the possible causes of failure to turn properly. A turning angle template, part of the range of Aviagen technical tools, demonstrating the optimum angle for incubating eggs, is also part of the publication.
Nicholson added: “Our unique 'How To' series provides an essential reference source for hatchery personnel. We identified a real need within the industry for clear, easy to follow advice and have produced the series as a result. We are delighted how well this publication has been received by our customers worldwide.”

UK hatchery expands with Petersime S-line incubators
One of Europe’s largest independent hatcheries, P.D. Hook Ltd., has recently expanded its hatchery unit in Great Yarmouth, UK, with an extra setting capacity of 24 million eggs per year.
The company, headquartered in Cote, Oxfordshire, UK, ordered 12 BioStreamer 24S setters and 6 BioStreamer 8H hatchers, which were installed and commissioned in January 2013. The expansion will bring the total hatching capacity of P.D. Hook at over 6.5 million chicks per week.
The Great Yarmouth hatchery was already successfully running on Petersime Conventional and AirStreamer incubators, and therefore the choice for Petersime’s most recent and advanced model, the BioStreamer, was obvious.
David Dunn, Hatchery Manager of the Great Yarmouth hatchery, explains: “Our mission is to supply our customers with chicks of the highest quality. Using advanced incubation equipment, together with strict bio-security standards, control procedures, and modern production lines, is key to ensuring this.”

US broiler eggs, chicks down last week of May
Commercial hatcheries in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 19-state weekly
program set 200 million eggs in incubators during the week ending June 2,
continuing 2012's downward trend and down 2 percent from the eggs set the
corresponding week in 2011, according to the USDA's latest report.
Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 85 percent. Of the states in the program, Georgia set the most eggs, with 33 million. Alabama and Arkansas rounded out the top three, setting 28.3 million and 21.6 million eggs, respectively.
Broiler growers in the program placed 167 million chicks for meat production during the week ending June 2, down 3 percent from the comparable week in 2011. Georgia, Arkansas and Alabama were also the top three states for chick placement, at 27.6 million, 20.8 million and 20.1 million chicks, respectively. Cumulative placements from January 1 through June 2 were 3.6 billion, down 4 percent from the same period in 2011, according to the USDA.

Aviagen turkey company breaks ground on Iowa hatchery
Valley of the Moon Commercial Poults, Aviagen's new company serving the turkey industry, officially broke ground on its new 87,000-square-foot, 50-million-egg hatchery, being built in Osceola, Iowa, on April 12.
When completed later this year, the facility will be the largest turkey incubation and hatching facility in the world, according to Aviagen. “Aviagen is proud to start this new company in Iowa," said Jihad Douglas, president of Aviagen Turkeys. "A key factor in choosing this location was the state’s commitment to agriculture. Osceola is great community in the heart of the grain belt and centrally located for our customer base.”
Jason Williams will be the hatchery operations manager for the new site. Williams has over seventeen years of breeder and hatchery management experience. He will oversee the construction phase of the hatchery and will manage the facility once construction is complete.
