Increasing egg consumption in Brazil is one of the main challenges of the country’s poultry industry. The combination of lack of knowledge and a number of myths about this food discourages consumption and places Brazil among the lowest egg consumers worldwide.
The average per capita consumption of Brazil last year was 170 eggs against the world average of 210 eggs per capita. In Mexico, the world's largest consumer, this number was of 360 eggs per person per year. The goal is to achieve an average consumption of 208 eggs per capita, which means four eggs per week, by 2016.
That is why the Egg Week represents the largest mobilization of the egg industry with qualified information and dissemination of scientific research to prove the benefits of this food.
Bringing information, clarifying myths and promoting egg consumption in Brazil are the main objectives of the Egg Week 2014, which will be held October 6-11. The campaign is an initiative of the Brazil Egg Institute and the ABPA (Associação Brasileira de Proteína Animal) with the support of representatives of all of the production chain, from the producer, through the major companies, up to retail.
This project brings together a series of simultaneous and coordinated actions in several Brazilian states to encourage consumption and clarify myths. Tasting of omelets in supermarkets, distributing leaflets in gyms, recipes, a folder on the benefits of eggs for nutrition, organizing conferences for doctors, nutritionists, children and teenagers, are some of the actions that are to be promoted. The organizers have the participation of the network of supermarkets and restaurants.
In 2013, these activities reached more than two million people across the country. "We must reach an even wider audience this year depending on the partners that join the project", foresees the president of Brazil Egg Institute and member of the organizing committee of the campaign of the Egg Week 2014, Ricardo Santin.
