Committee approves Food Safety Enhancement Act 2009

The House Energy and Commerce Committee approved HR 2749, the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009.
The bill will now be considered by the House of Representatives although final enactment will require parallel action from the U.S. Senate. The bill does not apply to eggs or products regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will receive enhanced regulatory powers to enforce recalls, increase the frequency of inspection of domestic food plants and mandates more detailed records for trace-back.
