In South Korea, poultry consumption is unofficially forecast at 840,000 metric tons in 2013, a 3 percent increase from 2012, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s International Egg & Poultry Review. Ample supplies, competitive pricing to red meat products and more regular consumption throughout the year are credited for the increase in poultry consumption in South Korea. Over the last several years, the growing number of fast food chain stores has also boosted poultry consumption in the country.
Broiler meat production is unofficially expected to be 740,000 metric tons in 2013, an increase of 2 percent from 726,000 metric tons in 2012 due to large carryover supplies and high international grain prices.
South Korean imports are unofficially projected to hit 110,000 metric tons in 2013, down 4 percent from 2012 (115,000 metric tons). The decline is attributed to higher prices in the U.S. and Brazil.
