The 12 outbreaks of high-pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza reported in Nepal between July 17 and July 24 have all been resolved, according to a report released on September 11 by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). The outbreaks affected commercial layers, commercial broilers, broiler parent stock, fresh house birds and backyard birds.
The virus was found in 19,385 birds, all of which died. A total of 111,764 birds were susceptible, with the remaining 92,379 destroyed.
Control measures included control of wildlife reservoirs, stamping out, quarantine, movement control inside the country, screening, disinfection of infected premises, dipping and spraying. No other control measures are expected, but intensive surveillance activities are ongoing throughout the country.
