Organized by the country’s Egg Institute, with the support of the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA) and a number of other stakeholders, activities include the dissemination of technical information on eggs, through to artistic and theatrical events for children.
The main focus of egg week this year will be to address the myths surrounding egg consumption, and the distribution of information about the benefits of eggs. Folders giving information aimed at the general public have been produced, along with material aimed at specific groups, such as pregnant women or retirees.
Egg Week is also seeing the airing of a television commercial highlighting dishes that can be cooked with eggs. The commercial was first shown in mid-September and is being broadcast on both subscription and free channels.
Along with the donation of eggs to charities, health and nutrition seminars, and recipe sharing and tastings, Brazil’s largest retailer GPA is supporting the week through various in-store activities and by offering discounts on eggs of up to 40 percent.
In the run up to the celebrations, ABPA undertook a number of initiatives highlighting not only the benefits of eggs, but also those of chicken and pig meat.
Per capita egg consumption in Brazil stood at 182 units last year, and the institute hopes that by 2016, this figure will have risen to 208.

World Egg Day festivities set for Oct. 9
Global celebrations are in place for the 20th year of World Egg Day on the Oct. 9. Established by the International Egg Commission in 1996, World Egg Day was created to promote the wonderful egg internationally. Now well recognized throughout the world every year on the second Friday of October, countries all around the world celebrate the benefits of eggs. Festivals, charitable events and city celebrations will all form part of a day of recognition for this small but mighty food source.
Eggs are the source of life and a symbol of fertility. Living in a society of limited world resources, a growing population and ever increasing demands for affordable provisions the egg is recognised as a very precious food throughout the world.
In developing countries where population growth is rapidly increasing, the nutritional benefits of the egg are far reaching. Whilst not as accessible in developing countries, eggs are still a very important and sustainable source of high quality protein, minerals and vitamins.
Now part of the World Egg Organisation, World Egg Day provides the perfect platform for reminding us all of the many health benefits of eating eggs. Cesar de Anda, Chairman of the IEC said: “The egg is one of the most important foods globally and its significance should not be overlooked! The most important source of high quality protein, the egg is perfect for sustainable development; the industry can feed a growing population, the egg is incredible.”
The World Egg Organisation represents the egg and brings together the International Egg Commission (IEC), the International Egg Foundation (IEF) and the International Egg Nutrition Consortium (IENC) promoting eggs and developing access to eggs across the world.

IEC highlights African initiatives for World Egg Day
World Egg Day will take place on October 10. As part of the 2014 World Egg Day celebrations, the International Egg Commission (IEC) is highlighting the work of the International Egg Foundation (IEF), which was created earlier this year to help provide those in developing countries to have greater access to eggs as part of its goal to combat malnutrition and gain access to a sustainable diet.
The IEF is working with charity Heart for Africa and supporting an orphanage in Swaziland by distributing hard cooked eggs to children. The project, part of Heart for Africa’s Project Canaan, will also fund and oversee the construction of an egg farm to provide a sustainable source of food for the orphanage and for the local community.
The IEC also notes that the IEF is working with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, sharing knowledge and technical expertise with national egg organizations in Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
“As well as providing access to food, small scale egg production schemes have been proven to help people in developing countries achieve financial independence, increase their social standing, and encourage a sense of community. The IEF works from the ground roots up, to create a sustainable, self-sufficient food supply,” said Julian Madeley, managing director of the International Egg Foundation.

World Egg Day is culmination of Brazil's Egg Week
Friday, October 11 may be World Egg Day but, in Brazil, it also the last day of Egg Week. Since October 7 the country has witnessed a series of events that have brought consumers together with the various players in the egg production chain.
Various activities have been taking place in Brazil, including omelet tastings in supermarkets, talks with various sectors of the public ranging from children to health professionals, the distribution of information packs to gyms, and partnerships with bars and restaurants to increase awareness of the benefits of eating eggs.
Organized by the Brazilian Egg Institute and Novus do Brasil, the initiative has benefitted from the support of various companies, including Sanovo, Merial, Novus, Porto Alimentos, DSM, Agroceres Multimix, Uniquimica and Grupo Pao de Acucar.
One of the aims of Egg Week is to increase egg consumption in the country, which is one of the lowest in the world at 164 per capita to 208 over the coming years.
Various actions are being undertaken to help promote the understanding of the nutritional benefits of eggs and to help raise consumption. Novus do Brasil, for example is distributing information kits for its employees' children, including eggs in a special menu at the company's canteens and conducting information campaigns with its partners.
Guillerme Fray, marketing coordinator with Novus do Brasil, is enthusiastic about raising per capita consumption to 208 per annum, given that this is only four extra units per week, and adds that Egg Week offers a great opportunity to address some of the health myths surrounding eggs.
Egg photographs, egg slogans
Novus do Brasil has also been running a photographic competition. Photographs of eggs can be uploaded to a Facebook page and winning entrant will be rewarded with a gift voucher.
The Brazilian Egg Institute has also been offering a prize, in this case an eggs themed cook book by chef Michel Roux, which will be awarded to the entrant with the best slogan encouraging egg consumption.
Amongst other initiatives has been special egg breakfasts organized by Merial, along with the distribution of eggs and books in schools.

International Egg Commission, FAO partner to end hunger for World Egg Day
In celebration of World Egg Day on Friday, October 11, the International Egg Commission (IEC) is working with the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to help end world hunger. The organizations are working with the governments and egg producers in nine southern Africa countries share information and gain practical advice about the nutritional value of eggs, as well as technical advice on egg production and disease management.
Julian Madeley, director general at the IEC, explained: "It's estimated that in the world today, a billion people are underfed and undernourished, and this is going to get even worse over the next 40 years, as the global population is set to increase by another 3 billion people.
"This is unacceptable to everybody, and on behalf of the entire egg industry, the IEC is committed to doing what we can to help prevent hunger. Eggs have an important role to play in this; as well as being an excellent source of high-quality protein, containing the essential vitamins and minerals needed for a healthy diet, they are an affordable and readily available source of food throughout most of the world. We are committed to working with the FAO to help eliminate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition."
