UK broiler chick placings, slaughterings up in May


    UK broiler chick placings for May were 2.7 percent higher than in May 2011, at 72 million birds, according to the latest report from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Turkey placings were 2.2 percent higher than May 2011 numbers, at 1.3 million birds.
    Broiler slaughterings were 0.5 percent higher in May than the same time in 2011, at 67 million birds, while turkey slaughterings were 5.7 percent lower at 1.1 million birds. UK poultry meat production in May came in at 119,000 metric tons, 1.9 percent higher than May 2011 numbers.
