Mexico's government may import up to 132,000 tons of eggs to prevent price increases related to a recent bird flu outbreak that has resulted in the deaths of nearly 1 million chickens in the Mexican state of Jalisco.
The government will suspend import duties from countries Mexico doesn't have free trade agreements with, according to Economy Secretary Bruno Ferrari; Mexico is currently looking at Turkey, Poland, China and Ukraine. At the same time, Ferrari said Mexico is still a strong supplier of eggs. “This department will act severely against those who are exploiting this situation to raise prices without economic justification,” he said.
