USDA lowers turkey production forecast for 2013, 2014

The United States Department of Agriculture has lowered its forecast for U.S. turkey production in 2013 and 2014, citing lower hatching numbers than originally expected. The USDA turkey production forecast was released in the December 10 World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report.
The USDA in November forecast annual 2013 U.S. turkey production at 5.86 billion pounds, but in December lowered the estimate to 5.84 billion pounds. The forecast for 2014 U.S. turkey production was also lowered in December to 5.2 billion pounds, declining from 5.96 billion pounds.
Projections for ending stocks of turkey were also lowered for both 2013 and 2014. December's estimates called for 300 million pounds of turkey in ending stocks for 2013, down from the 290 million pounds forecast in November. The November ending stocks forecast for 2014 was 310 million pounds, but was lowered in December to 295 million pounds.
