The UK is importing and exporting more fresh and frozen poultry meat.
Figures extrapolated by the country’s National Farmers Union from government data reveal that, over the first eight months of this year, the UK exported 7.7 percent more fresh and frozen poultry meat compared to the same period last year, while imports were 2.9 percent higher.
The European Union accounts for 68.9 percent of the UK’s poultry meat exports. The Netherlands receives over 32 percent of total exports and the volume exported to that country over the period increased by in excess of 24 percent. The Republic of Ireland is the second biggest receiver, accounting for almost 13 percent of the total.
As far as imports are concerned, the UK sourced 94 percent of its imported fresh and frozen poultry products from the EU, and imports from this market were up by 3 percent year on year.
The Netherlands is the biggest supplier to the UK, accounting for 45.6 percent of total imports, however, imports from this source were down by 4 percent over the period. Poland is the second largest supplier, accounting for 13 percent of the total. Polish exports to the UK increased by 5.9 percent over the period.
