In a study funded in part by the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association (USPOULTRY), the National Academy of Sciences looked at the needs for research and research support for animal agriculture. The study found that meeting the expected growth in global demand for animal protein will require a greater investment in animal science research. The report identifies research priorities and recommends that governments and the private sector increase their support for this research.
“This is a landmark study that recognizes the importance of research in the success of animal agriculture. The study points out the past decline in funding for research and recommends that state and federal agencies restore funding for animal agricultural research. USPOULTRY is pleased to have been a part of supporting the National Academy of Sciences in their efforts,” commented Dr. John Glisson, vice president of research programs, USPOULTRY.
"Animal agriculture is facing substantial challenges, including a steep projected increase in demand and the need to adapt to changing environmental conditions," added Bernard Goldstein, chair of the committee that wrote the report and professor emeritus in the department of environmental and occupational health at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. "Animal science research needs to be reinvigorated if our agricultural system is to meet these challenges in a sustainable way."
