Poultry consumption in Australia is expected to grow at a rate of 3% per year between 2011-2012 and 2015-2016, eventually reaching a total of 1 million metric tons annually, say analysts at the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Science.
Red meats will become more expensive at retail stores in Australia during the next 12 months and this will have the effect of further boosting the national demand for poultry meat. Poultry is already the most consumed meat in Australia on a carcass-weight-equivalent basis. According to ABARES, consumption will increase steadily from about 38 kilograms per person per year in 2011-2012 to 40 kilograms in 2015-2016. Australia’s poultry meat production in 2011-2012 will reach 910,000 metric tons, in comparison with 885,000 tons in 2010-2011 and only 835,000 tons as recently as 2007-2008.
