Wholesale prices for Georgia's poultry have fallen due to decreased demand, affecting the state's producers and forcing them to consider cutting back on production, according to reports.
Boneless, skinless chicken breasts are currently selling for $1.55 per pound, a 25% decrease from 2010, according to the Georgia Department of Agriculture. At the same time, feed prices have continued to rise, a cost increase that poultry producers can't pass on to consumers due to the decreased demand. "There's competition out there, people don't have to eat or live off your product," said Greg Pilewicz, head of the department's Poultry Market News. "They can purchase other products to put on their table." To boost prices, according to Pilewicz, Georgia poultry producers are planning on scaling back production in the remaining months of 2011.
