U.S. commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly program set 192 million eggs in incubators during the week ending Aug. 27, 2011, down 7% from the eggs set the corresponding week in 2010 (see chart).
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 85%.
Broiler growers in the program placed 164 million chicks for meat production during the week, down 4% from the comparable week in 2010. Cumulative placements from Jan. 2, 2011, through Aug. 27, 2011, were 5.75 billion, down 1% from 2010 numbers (see chart).
