The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has confirmed that now 47,091,293 birds have now been infected with avian influenza since December 2014. WATTAgNet has added this bird number count to its avian influenza outbreak map to help you keep track of the growing number.
As the avian influenza outbreak continues, USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza (HPAI) in another flock of birds in Iowa. USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories confirmed HPAI H5N2 in Sioux County, Iowa, on June 9, 2015. A total of 2,500 mixed game fowl were affected, making this the 20th detection in this county.
The affected premises have been quarantined and birds on the property will be depopulated to prevent the spread of the disease. Birds from the flock will not enter the food system.
