Environmental action group Protecting Our Indian River filed a court appeal on December 3 to overturn a Sussex County (Del.) Board of Adjustment decision to approve the Allen Harim Foods poultry plant in Millsboro, Del. Allen Harim Foods intends to convert Pinnacle Foods' former Vlassic pickle plant into a poultry plant.
A hearing on the matter has been scheduled for the evening of December 4.
Sussex County's approval of the Allen Harim poultry plant plans came amid opposition from area residents, who were concerned about the potential environmental ramifications of opening the plant. However, the Allen Harim plans have been endorsed by Delaware state officials from both major political parties, including Gov. Jack Markell, Rep. John Atkins and Sen. Gerald Hocker.
The poultry processor has previously announced plans to have two plants in one at the Millsboro facility, using one side as a processing plant and the other as a cook plant. Allen Harim hopes to use the plant to process a special breed of small chickens used in a ginseng stew popular in Asia. The plant would employ about 700 people.
