South Dakota has had its first confirmed cases of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV), the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) reported. PEDV, which was first discovered in the United States during the spring of 2013, has now been confirmed in 19 states.
According to the most recent report from NAHLN, which includes new cases between November 24 and December 1, South Dakota was one of 12 states to have at least one confirmed case of PEDV during the week of November 24, for a weekly total of 412 cases.
North Carolina, which has seen a surge in PEDV cases in recent weeks, has had the most cases at 1,260, followed by 909 PEDV cases Oklahoma.
The virus can have a 100 percent mortality rate with piglets and has no known cure.
