The chairman of the British Pig Executive and board
member of the UK's National Pig Association,
Stewart Houston, met with England's Foreign Secretary William Hague for
high-level talks on how the UK pig industry can contribute to the government's
drive for an export-led economic recovery.
Accompanied by producers Paul and Mark Westgarth and Richard Alton, and together with two representatives from pig buyer and processor Cranswick Country Foods, Houston called for more progress in opening up market opportunities for companies such as Cranswick. Britain has still not managed to start exporting to mainland China, according to Houston. "Despite a number of setbacks, we were assured that trade would be able to start at the beginning of this year," he said. "This has not yet happened."
