An investigation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that nine inmates in a Tennessee correctional facility became ill with Salmonella Heidelberg after eating mechanically separated chicken from Tyson Foods. Of the nine inmates affected, two were hospitalized.
The illnesses at the Tennessee correctional facility began November 28-29, 2013. Of the nine inmates affected, eight of them stated they had eaten foods containing mechanically separated chicken during the previous week.
Nineteen other people from 12 states also were affected by Salmonella Heidelberg, the CDC reported, citing a connection between Salmonella and Tyson Foods.
Tyson Foods on January voluntarily recalled about 33,840 pounds of the uncooked mechanically separated chicken in 10-pound chubs after learning people had become ill. The product was produced exclusively for a group of institutional customers and was not available to the general public.
