Fournier Foods wants to bring poultry plant to New Hampshire

  • From WATTAgNet:
Fournier Foods wants to build a 5,500 square foot poultry plant that would process up to 2,000 chickens every eight hours to Concord, New Hampshire.
Fournier Foods discussed the company’s plans with a large crowd at an October 1 public meeting. The plant would bring 23 jobs per eight-hour shift to start, but the number of shifts could grow to three if business is good, Fournier Foods officials said.
Since it will be a small complex, no birds will be housed there.
“This is the kind of facility you will be proud to have in your community. We will be proud of it, too,” said Craig Fournier, owner of Fournier Foods.
Andrew Howe, an area poultry farmer, said he could meet the growing demand for his free-range chicken. “If we work with Fournier Foods, we’re bringing chicken down every week so that we can take home fresh chicken to sell off the shelf of the store,” Howe said.
Several Concord residents said they are concerned about trucking in the birds, noise and odor. Company officials promised there would be no odor, but neighbors want guarantees.
Fournier Foods is not the only company that has recently faced concerns from those in the community where poultry processing expansion plans are being considered. Sanderson Farms is wanting to expand into Fayetteville, North Carolina, where some residents have expressed similar worries. Allen Harim, which recently purchased a former Vlasic pickle plant in Millsboro, Delaware, has also dealt with residents worried about the noise and potential environmental impacts.
