Two studies evaluating the efficacy of Biorigin’s natural ingredients were the highlight in the European Society of Veterinary &Comparative Nutrition (ESVCN) event, held in Utrecht, the Netherlands, on September 11-13. The studies were over MacroGard and Selemax.
An oral presentation showed the results of the supplementation of female dogs with MacroGard before spaying.
MacroGard is a source of highly purified, exposed, and preserved beta 1,3/1,6 glucans produced from a specially-selected strain of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This inclusion in the diet of pets, livestock, and aquatic organisms modulates the animal’s immune response according to its immune status, promoting better immune status and health.
After operation, the supplemented dogs presented better immune response, higher blood leukocyte counts, and reduced inflammatory response, as shown by the lowers levels of C-reactive protein. The results of this study, together with other studies with pets, add evidences to the scientific dossier of the product and confirm its immunomodulating effects.
The results of Selemax supplementation to dogs were presented in the poster session.
The additive Selemax consists of selenium-containing inactivated yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae NCYC R646), enriched during the fermentation process with organic selenocompounds, and is intended to be used as a nutritional additive, providing a source of the essential trace element selenium for all animal species. This organic selenium source was proven to be efficient and safe, and it is approved by the European Food Safety Association (EFSA).
This study showed that Selemax reduced oxidative stress and therefore improved the health of dogs submitted to adverse situations, compared to an inorganic selenium source.
