Legislation to expedite new therapies and drug development for livestock and poultry—among the top priorities for turkey growers and processors—is set to become law after last week's 390-12 approval by the United States House of Representatives. The Animal Drug and Animal Generic Drug User Fee Reauthorization Act provides a more predictable and timely review of new livestock and poultry medications by supporting Food and Drug Administrator's costs with manufacturers' fees through 2018.
Brand-name animal drug manufacturers' fees will be set at $23.6 million in the 2014 fiscal year and $21.6 million each subsequent year through 2018. The generic animal drug industry fees are $7.3 million for 2014 and then $30 million for the next four years.
