PEDV cases rising significantly in North Carolina

The number of new porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) cases reported in North Carolina has increased dramatically since September 15, with 119 new cases being reported. The state now has a total of 159 confirmed cases.
According to the October 30 PEDV report filed by the National Animal Health Laboratory Network, there are now 924 cases of PEDV in the United States. North Carolina still ranks third nationwide. Iowa has had the most confirmed cases at 233, followed by Oklahoma with 199. However, the reported cases in those two states in recent weeks have not been as high. Iowa has had 52 confirmed PEDV cases since September 15, while Oklahoma has had 44.
The virus, which can have a 100 percent mortality rate in piglets and has no known cure, first appeared in the U.S. in the spring of 2013. Since its arrival in the U.S., PEDV has been confirmed in 18 states.
