Applications sought for Humane Slaughter Award
The Humane Slaughter Association (HSA), an independent charity that works towards achieving high welfare standards for food animals at markets, during transport and at slaughter, is inviting applications for its 2015 Humane Slaughter Award for significant advances in humane slaughter of farmed animals.
The award scheme aims to help recognize important contributions and help promote the pursuit of further advances in humane slaughter. It is open to individuals or organizations anywhere in the world whose work has resulted in significant advances in the humane slaughter of farmed livestock, including poultry, pigs, cattle, sheep and fish.
The HSA is keen to receive applications, or nominations of potential candidates from third parties, relating to advances in science or important technological developments that led or are leading to advances in humane slaughter. The winner of the award will earn a prize of GBP3,000 (US$4,922) and the deadline for receipt is December 12.
Past winners have included Dr. Bert Lambooij of Wageningen University, the Netherlands; the IRTA/UAB Animal Welfare Research Group, Institut de Recerca i Tecnologia Agroalimentaries (IRTA)/Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB); and the stunning and Slaughter Group of the Univeristy of Bristol Veterinary School.
