Four people were transported to a hospital after an ammonia leak at the Shenandoah Processing plant in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
    From WATTAgNet:
Four workers were treated at a hospital for minor inhalation of ammonia following a small chemical leak at the Shenandoah Processing poultry plant in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Harrisonburg Fire Chief Larry Shifflett told reporters some vapors leaked from an ammonia line at the plant as workers were draining the line on the morning of April 27.
The plant where the accident occurred is a relatively new operation as Shenandoah Processing, a company that formed in late 2013 opened the plant in March 2014. The facility was previously owned by Pilgrim’s, but was reopened by Shenandoah Processing after the company invested about $2.2 million in the facility. The company decided to open the plant as a way to serve the growing market for organically raised and "all-natural" chicken.
At the time of the Shenandoah Processing plant’s opening, the company stated that the facility will provide processing services for its sister company, Shenandoah Valley Organics, a poultry growing operation. According to the company’s website, Shenandoah Valley Organics sources all of its food products from local farms in the Shenandoah Valley.
In addition, the facility was built to provide custom processing services to individual farmers and growers who wished to have poultry prepared for retail sale.
