Another case of highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza has been found in a layer flock in Iowa, the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced on May 15.
APHIS confirmed the presence of in a flock in Lyon County, Iowa, the first confirmed case in that county. An estimated 275,000 chickens were in the flock.
With the latest avian influenza case, APHIS has now reported 163 avian influenza detections in the United States, affecting nearly 33.8 million birds. Most of those avian influenza cases have been of the H5N2 serotype.
The affected premises have been quarantined and birds on the property will be depopulated to prevent the spread of the disease. Birds from the flock will not enter the food system.
APHIS, along with various state agriculture and wildlife agencies, has now confirmed avian influenza cases in 20 states, involving commercial poultry, backyard poultry and wild birds. Cases of avian influenza have also been confirmed in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and British Columbia.
