Minnesota and Iowa – the two states with the most cases of avian influenza in 2015 – both had two additional cases of H5N2 avian influenza confirmed on May 20 by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).
Minnesota had one case confirmed in a commercial layer flock and one confirmed in a commercial turkey flock. One of the Iowa cases occurred in a commercial turkey flock, while the other was in a backyard flock.
Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, has now had 33 avian influenza detections, with its latest case being confirmed in a flock of 42,600 turkeys. The other new case in Minnesota occurred in Renville County, affecting a flock of 625,500 chickens. This is Renville County’s second avian influenza case.
In Iowa, Sac County had its fifth avian influenza case, with a flock of 28,400 turkeys affected. A backyard flock was also infected in Sioux County, although the number of birds affected has not yet been confirmed. With that discovery, Sioux County has now had five cases.
The affected premises have been quarantined and birds on the property will be depopulated to prevent the spread of the disease.
