Accomack County, Virginia, is seeing a surge in applications to construct poultry houses in the county.
According to a DelmarvaNow report, the county currently has 84 poultry house applications pending. In addition, a producer from another state had earlier inquired about the possibility of constructing 72 more.
The new applications and inquiries signal substantial growth in the Virginia county’s poultry industry, as only 16 new poultry houses were built there from 2010 until late 2014. It is a growth that county officials believe will be a trend – at least for the short term.
According to a report prepared by Rich Morrison and Kristen Tremblay of the Accomack County Planning Department, “applications have continued to be filed at a high rate and all indications are that the trend will continue for at least the next one to two years,”
Some of the applications are being filed for locations that have not previously housed poultry. As a result, county officials said that residents of those areas are already voicing concerns about living near poultry farms.
Accomack County is located on the Eastern edge of Virginia on the Delmarva Peninsula. Its population is estimated to be just over 33,000 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
