The Tunisia poultry industry is losing an estimated TND25 million (US$12.8 million) in 2015, announced Fethi Ben Khelifa, deputy secretary general of the National Federation of Poultry farmers under the Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries (UTAP). The announcement was made to ‘Le Maghreb’ and reported by African Manager.
According to UTAP, Tunisian producers cover 59 percent of the country’s poultry meat requirements and all of the eggs. The governorate of Sfax supplies 56 percent of the nation’s egg output and 10 percent of its chicken.
The same magazine recently reported figures from the National Institute of Statistics, which showed the consumer price index increased again in July 2015, 0.3 percent higher than in the previous month.
Food prices, however, have been controlled by the Tunisian Ministry of Trade. Egg prices were reduced by 3.1 percent, poultry by 0.6 percent and beef by 0.1 percent.
