The World Organisation for Animal Health adopted a new chapter on broiler welfare at its 81st General Session earlier this year.
The chapter had been presented at the previous General Session, however, consensus could not be reached despite it having been in circulation for a number of years. Prior to being presented at this year's meeting, a number of revisions were made and consensus was achieved.
The newly adopted chapter includes criteria and measurables for assessing animal welfare in broiler production.
Among other changes to the OIE's international standards and guidelines were new or revised chapters on wider animal welfare and use of antimicrobial agents.
