USPOULTRY and the USPOULTRY Foundation announce the completion of a funded research project at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA, in which researchers studied the interaction of temperature, relative humidity and air velocity in influencing heat production by broilers in tunnel-ventilated houses. The project is part of the Association’s comprehensive research program encompassing all phases of poultry and egg production and processing. A brief summary of the completed project is shown below. A complete report, along with information on other Association research, may be obtained by going to USPOULTRY’s website, www.uspoultry.org. The project summary is as follows:
Project #F050: Factors that Influence Bird Heat Production in Tunnel-Ventilated Broiler House
The findings of Dr. Brian Fairchild and Michael Czarick at the University of Georgia Department of Poultry Science help to clarify how broilers of different body weights produce and lose heat in response to the environment. Several trends in bird heat production and loss were observed, which will provide practical insight for growers and integrators to minimize heat stress in broilers during hot weather.
