Highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza cases continue to mount in Minnesota, with the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirming two new outbreaks on April 22.
Among the two new cases are a commercial turkey operation and a flock of mixed poultry.
A flock of 62,600 turkeys in Kandiyohi County was affected by the virus, according to APHIS.
The affected flock of mixed poultry involved 151 birds. That flock was located in Pipestone County, the first confirmed avian influenza case in the county.
Both properties have been quarantined and disinfected. The flocks are being depopulated.
So far in 2015, avian influenza has been detected in 17 states. In addition to Minnesota, avian influenza cases have been confirmed in North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Washington, Oregon, California, New Mexico, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Nevada and Wyoming. The virus has also been confirmed in flocks in the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Ontario.
