The Food Manufacturers Immigration Coalition, the American Council on International Personnel, the National Association of Manufacturers and the Society for Human Resource Management released the following joint statement:
"Our organizations strongly support the Portman-Tester amendment because U.S. employers need a 21st century verification system that moves toward a fully electronic, integrated and secure system that prevents identity theft and provides certainty in hiring. We urge the Senate to hold a vote on Senators Portman and Tester's amendment."
The amendment, submitted by Republican Sen. Rob Portman and Democrat Sen. Jon Tester of Montana, would expand E-Verify, an Internet-based system head by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services that allows businesses to determine the eligibility of potential employees.
